Congratulations to both of them for such great performances at the national level. Jul 12 2006 - 2006 Atlantic Hershey Track and Field Meet extremely successful 2006 Atlantic Hershey Track and Field Meet extremely successful 4 N.B. Athletes qualify for North American Finals Last Sunday July 9th Athletics NB hosted the Atlantic finals of the Hershey Track and field Championships in Dieppe. Over 200 athletes were registered for the meet from over 50 communities throughout the Atlantic Provinces—athletes competed from as far west as St. Stephens and east as Charlottetown PEI, as well as far north as Miramachi and south as Yarmouth N.S.. The program is open to boys and girls in three different age groups---9 and 10 years old (Born 1996 and 1997), 11 and 12 years old (Born 1994 and 1995) and 13 and 14 years old (Born 1992 and 1993) and these athletes took part in the following events: the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m & 1600m runs, plus 4 X 100m relays, the standing long jump and the softball throw. Outstanding performances were recorded by a number young athletes including: Merissa Clowater, Leah MacAulay, Katie Daley and Kiersten Brennan in the 9 and 10 year old girls; Kevin McGraw, and Paul Lafferriere in the 9 and 10 year old boys: Kalie Smith, Erin Kelly, and Rachel Wright in the 11 and 12 year old girls; Conrad Yiridoe, Chad McGrath, Gregory D’Eon and Tommy McGinn in the 11 and 12 year old boys; Rachel Boyle Laura Kerr, and Nicole Forest in the 13 and 14 year old girls; and Alex Peabody and Brady O’Brien in the 13 and 14 year old boys division. This year, four young people from New Brunswick will represent the Atlantic Provinces in Hershey Pennsylvania from August 3rd to the 6th. These young athletes are: Kiersten Brennan from Blackville will compete in the girls 9-10 200m dash. She came first at the Atlantic Final with a time of 32.6 Mike Jacobs from Fredericton will run the boys 13-14 800m, and won that at the Finals in 2:13.3 Tommy McGinn also from Fredericton will be in the boys 11-12 400m dash. He ran a 1:07.4 at the Atlantic Finals and Kevin McGraw from Shediac qualified in the boys 9-10 100m dash. He came first at the Atlantic Finals with a time of 8.2. Congratulations to those athletes, and good luck in the North American finals. · Hershey Foods Corporation covers all expenses associated with this trip. The Hershey Youth Program has been a national event in the U.S.A. for the past 27 years. Initiated as a playground track & field meet in 1975 in Charleston, W.Va., the program has become the largest youth sports program of it's kind in North America. The program was offered on a statewide level in West Virginia in 1976, became a 10-state regional event in 1997, and was offered nationally in 1978. Meets are now held in all 50 states and all across Canada. |
